Theories of Psychic Power

The Institute of Psychic Practitioners BCM Unifaculty London WC1N 3XX Great Britain email:

If we were to ask a typical cross section of the general public what they thought about psychic, mediums and spiritualists we would likely obtain a wide spectrum of responses. Probably quite a few would say that it was all a load of nonsense. Some of them may have had a bad experience with a psychic which quite naturally would colour their opinion whilst others would be simple sceptics.

Among the remainder of our sample would be the believers and the middle of the road guys ... the donít-knows and the well-maybes.

There are several theories which may explain psychic power from fraud, the well-meaning bewildered, the uncritical believers and several scientific explanations. Here, are some of these listed for you.

In almost every walk of life from plumbing through to banking and politics there are frauds. Fraud is often seen by some people as an easier option than trying to do the right thing. It has always been thus. It is little surprise therefore to occasionally find psychics exposed as frauds ... it happens.

Tempting though it is, we cannot then leap into concluding that all psychics, mediums and spiritualists are frauds. That is simply not a logical step.

Hypnosis and trance states

Every day each and almost everyone of us will have our normal state of awareness change due to the effect of hypnotic trance. Examples of when that happens abound. When we read a book or are watching an appealing television programme, we concentrate on that to the exclusion of much else going on around us. In effect we enter a mild trance because our attention is focussed. Alarmingly, that same process affects car and lorry drivers and especially on Motorways. Often the driver will suddenly arrive near to his exit and realise that he has driven for twenty miles or so without being aware of it. In that trance he will have sped up slowed down, changed gear, changed lanes and avoided collisions ... all on automatic pilot, an altered state of awareness where the mind so focusses as to unconsciously perform alright without our conscious awareness.

A similar altered state of awareness may give a psychic access to doors which when opened reveal aspects of the Spiritworld. There is a vaveat to that which is that in several of the hypnotic states it has been found that these can access the creative side of the human mind. That knowledge came to late to clear many falsely accused of child cruety and worse. Many of those convictions no longer stand due to the discovery of False Memory Syndrome where imagined circumstances were conjured up whilst the subject was in a hypnotic trance.

Quantum Physics

In our normal everyday world each thing is in its place... we are in our house or car and nowhere else. However, as we go down to the atomic and sub-atomic level a strange change takes place. Simply, a particle can appear to be in two places at once.

Stranger yet is the fact that the outcome of a sub-atomic event can be altered depending on whether someone is looking at it or not. The unobserved event will be different from the observed event. In that way our existence may not be what we think that it is. There may be much more to life than that which we easily perceive simply by looking around. Is there some connected effect with this wierd proposition which isexplaining psychic phenomena?

Well meaning

There are a number of well meaning folk who enter the world of spiritualism out of a desire to help their fellows. Not all of them are gifted psychics. Some have had some lucky experiences of making good forecasts or contacts and then believe that they can always do that. They will often find themselves ending up being grouped together perhaps unfairly with the fraudsters.

Jungian Psychology

The influential Swiss psychologist Carl Jung held that we all have a collective consciousness which is apart from our personal consciousness. He said,‚€úMy thesis then, is as follows: in addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents.‚€Ě

It is said that some Psychics have an ability to access the collective conscious and by that route are able to communicate with Spirits.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon

One of the strangest scientific phenomenons is known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon or E.V.P.

Many of its proponents and researchers claim that it is a route to communication with those who have passed over. They do so because during experiments it is possible literally to communicate with people who have lived before from Henry VIII to an ancient Pharoah and of course late relatives.

Now strange though that may seem to many, the truth incredibly is even stranger!

E.V.P. messages were first encountered by the staff using Morse Telegraphs. They found that when they arrived the next morning to check for new messages that there were messages from the day before.

Experimenters report not only contact with deceased spirits but also with living souls.

There are a number of possible explanations for this connected with the range of unseen dimensions which form part of our existence.
